You should never leave your funds in the TSP, transfer them to another eligible retirement account, begin taking distributions, or use a combination of strategies. The right choice depends on your retirement goals, income needs, investment preferences, and tax situation.
A TSP rollover generally involves transferring eligible retirement funds from the TSP into another qualified retirement account, such as an IRA or an employer-sponsored plan. When handled correctly, the transfer may preserve the tax-deferred status of the funds.
A properly completed direct rollover will avoid taxation. Withdrawals paid directly to you may involve withholding, taxes, or penalties depending on your circumstances. You should review the transaction carefully before taking action.
